Martial Arts and Karate Classes in Maidenhead
Maidenhead Martial Arts Classes
Shuhari Self Defence has been part of the Maidenhead community since expanding from our original Slough base, and family training has become a defining feature of the Maidenhead dojo. Parents regularly join us alongside their children rather than watching from the sidelines. It changes the dynamic at home: you share the same vocabulary, the same challenges, and the same sense of progress.
What sets Shuhari apart from other martial arts clubs is the breadth of what you learn in a single session. We don't run separate karate, boxing, or BJJ classes. Instead, sessions draw from multiple martial arts disciplines: karate, boxing, wrestling, Krav Maga, kung fu, judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing, and Muay Thai. Our instructors weave these together into a practical self-defence curriculum, so you develop both striking and grappling skills from the outset.
Sessions last one hour and follow a structured format. You can expect a warm-up, technique instruction with a training partner, pressure-tested drills, pad work and sparring. If you have never trained before, that is completely normal here. Our instructors adjust the intensity for each student, and most people who walk through the door have no prior experience at all.
Our Maidenhead instructors are DBS checked and first-aid trained. Across Shuhari's six Berkshire locations, we have 23 instructors, a 4.9-star Trustpilot rating from over 230 verified reviews, and more than 8,670 students trained since the club was founded in 2010.
Larchfield Primary School is straightforward to reach from Cookham, Taplow, Bray, Marlow, Furze Platt, and Cox Green, with on-site parking available for visitors.

What Makes Our Maidenhead Dojo Different?
- Midweek training that protects your weekends. With classes on Wednesday and Friday evenings, you can train consistently without sacrificing Saturday mornings or Sunday plans. This is ideal for families juggling school runs, work, and weekend commitments.
- Back-to-back sessions on Wednesdays. The 18:00 children and adults class runs straight into a 19:15 teenagers and adults session. Families with younger children can train together at 18:00, while older teens and adults have their own dedicated slot immediately afterwards.
- A genuine family training culture. Maidenhead is where Shuhari's family training ethos is very strong. Parents and children learning the same techniques, in the same class, is how the majority of our Maidenhead students train.
- Multiple disciplines. Our Shuhari dojo in Maidenhead integrates karate, boxing, wrestling, Krav Maga, kung fu, judo, BJJ, kickboxing, and Muay Thai techniques into sessions, giving you a broad skill set.

Frequently Asked Questions
When are the Maidenhead classes?
We run three sessions per week at Larchfield Primary School. On Wednesdays there is a children and adults class from 18:00 to 19:00, followed by a teenagers and adults session from 19:15 to 20:15. On Fridays there is a children and adults class from 18:00 to 19:00. All sessions are one hour long.
Can my family train together?
Yes, and many do. Our 18:00 classes on Wednesdays and Fridays are specifically designed for children and adults to train side by side. It is one of the most rewarding aspects of our Maidenhead dojo. We wrote a dedicated article on family martial arts training in Maidenhead if you'd like to read more about how it works.
What age can children start?
Children can join from age 7. We chose this age deliberately: younger children benefit more from play-based movement, while from age 7 their cognitive development is mature enough to engage with structured martial arts training that involves contact. There is no upper age limit for adults.
I've never done any martial arts. Will I cope?
You will be in good company. The majority of students at our Maidenhead dojo started with no martial arts background whatsoever. Our instructors pair beginners accordingly and adjust the pace to suit everyone in the room. If the idea of a first class feels daunting, read our beginner's guide for a walkthrough of exactly what happens.
What styles of martial arts do you teach?
We are a hybrid system that draws techniques from karate, boxing, wrestling, Krav Maga, kung fu, judo, BJJ, kickboxing, and Muay Thai. This integrated approach is central to our teaching philosophy and is explained in detail in our types of martial arts guide.
What's the difference between the 18:00 and 19:15 Wednesday sessions?
The 18:00 class is open to children (aged 7+) and adults together, making it ideal for families. The 19:15 class is for teenagers and adults only, and tends to move at a slightly higher intensity. Some of our adult students attend both back-to-back for a full two hours of training.
Do I need to buy a uniform or equipment?
Not straight away. Comfortable gym clothes are all you need for your first few sessions. Once you decide to continue, you can pick up a Shuhari gi at the dojo. No special equipment is required to begin.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. We offer a free trial class so you can experience a session before making any commitment. Contact us to arrange a time, or call 07739 464 005.
Is there parking at Larchfield Primary School?
Yes. The school has an on-site car park with space for visitors. The venue is also within walking distance of Maidenhead town centre.
How does martial arts help with self defence in real situations?
Effective self defence requires a mix of striking and grappling techniques, practised under realistic pressure. Because our classes cover pragmatic techniques from multiple martial arts, you learn to handle situations at every range: standing, in close quarters, and on the ground. For a detailed breakdown, read our self-defence comparison.
I work full-time. Are there daytime or weekend classes in Maidenhead?
Our Maidenhead classes are on Wednesday and Friday evenings, designed to fit around a standard working day. If you also want weekend sessions, our Slough dojo runs classes on Saturdays and Sundays, and your membership gives you access to all six of our Berkshire locations.
Is it realistic to start martial arts as an adult?
Absolutely. A good proportion of our Maidenhead students are adults who took up training in their 30s, 40s, or later. Martial arts rewards consistency and patience, not just raw athleticism, which makes it a natural fit for adults. Our adult beginners article features real stories from students who started later in life.
